New Kids on the Block: Urban Grind

Friday, 15 May, 2015
Wayne Burrows has been a long standing member of the South African coffee community. He has placed among the best baristas, won the All African Championship (2010) and trained some of the best in the business. Through his journey and training, he met Dirk Both. Dirk's passion for coffee was sparked and so was a friendship and they began to dream...

Wayne has been hinting to us for a while that he had something up his sleeve and now it is open and available for all to visit!

Urban Grind Roasters is a sight to behold on 6th Street in Parkhurst, the wooden exterior is inviting and unique, but just wait until you get inside! It's a coffee geeks heaven!

Wayne explained to us that the store is not a 'cafe', you can come in and have a great cup of coffee using the beans roasted on the premises but the focus is strictly retail and training. He has drawn from his travels to the US and the East in building this first of it's kind, all retail coffee one stop shop.

The goal is to be unique and to do things in a different way. From choosing their roaster and their beautiful packaging to the equipment they bring in like The Little Guy, that can only be found here and Tiamo brewing equipment (which is gorgeous!). They wanted to set themselves apart. And they have done this with aplomb! Beautiful crockery in all the colours of the rainbow, tailored especially for competition standard drinks.

This is great news for the South African coffee industry indeed.

Congratulations Dirk and Wayne! We love your concept.

Wayne Burrows and Dirk Both sit outside their masterpiece. Welcome to the world, Urban Grind!

The man with his machine. Wayne has been experimenting like crazy on his beautiful roaster. You definitely want to taste the results!

Pardon is the head Barista Trainer, he made us a mean cappuccino!

The Judge. The Roastery blend, Guatemala, Ethiopia and Uganda. Delightful!

Nifty customised bags to hold the precious beans.

This is not a cafe. If you have a cup of coffee while shopping or training here, they ask only that you make a donation if you enjoyed your coffee.

They're all about the learning here at Urban Grind. Regular coffee education events happen at this beautiful venue.

Beautiful crockery for beautiful coffee!

Just look at Dirk's vintage VW van! Amazing! This is quite obviously a man with great taste :)

The La Marzocco Linea Mini looks right at home in Urban Grind's training facility. It made it's Johannesburg debut at the launch of this fine establishment!
